Materiality includes places and artefacts and previous research has shown the impact of places on innovation. However, few studies link the materiality of place and technologies over time. Based on an historical case study of commercial aviation from its inception toward mass transportation in 1960, we find a recursive circle between places and technologies that evolved over time. Places first impacted the emergence of the industry and funneled choice among technologies, then technologies were improved to fit better with places. Finally, places were adapted to fit the chosen technology, leading to a standardization of both places and technologies.
