“Networking” is considered as crucial for building a sustainable career in creative industries. Most research that highlights the importance of networks for career development assumes first that individuals are strategic career actors using networks as resources to achieve their aims, and second that networks are social networks and thus consist of people. This article offers a less human-centered approach by including non-human actors in networks. It uses ANT as a theoretical lens to illuminate and understand the role of non-human actors in career making practices and draws on empirical material gathered at the opening of a solo exhibition by Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere. The article provides new insights to the literature on creative careers by demonstrating how a heterogeneous network performs career making practices – showing work, telling stories, and connecting the network. It strengthens theorizing about the role of heterogeneous networks and especially the non-human actors in the networks for sustainable careers in creative industries.
