Innovations and new technologies are at the core of the strategies deployed by public managers when they implement smart-city programs. Although different studies exist, the topic has received sparse attention in the Management Science literature, and a synthesis of our collective understanding is still missing. To tackle this, we performed a systematic literature review taking stock of existing research from different fields to identify what is known and what remains unknown in advancing the scalability and transferability of smart-city initiatives. The findings show that the literature on smart cities has been instrumental in understanding how digital technologies are adopted to shape and transform urban environments and how technological innovation can create economic, environmental and social value for cities and their citizens by, among others, addressing persistent sustainability challenges. The contributions include an integrative framework that supports new streams of research to acquaint management research with different theoretical perspectives better.
