First-line managers (FLM) are understudied actor in the management literature. Their strategy work, particularly, has not been studied as FLM as usually seen as only responsible for operational implementation. Departing from a narrow vision of FLM we study their strategy work adopting a practice lens. Our study particularly highlights the multimodal feature of FLM strategy work and its specificity, namely material, bodily and visual aspects and their related ongoing assemblage. Contrasting research studying managers’ discursive and cognitive practices, we highlight visual practices (seeing, being seen, making visible) actively shaping FLM strategizing. Such strategizing is embedded in the socio-material features of FLM working environment, making it hardly transferable from one managerial position to another.
