This theoretical article aims to rethink the study of natural resources in the discipline of strategy. While the resource-based view of the firm has been the major strategy framework mobilized for the study organizational resources, it lacks explanatory power when it comes to studying natural resources. We show that the assumptions that underpin the theory cannot lead to a sustainable management of natural resources. Thus, by building on the research paradigms of the commons and of the Anthropocene, we offer theoretical propositions aimed at studying the sustainable management of natural resources by focusing on their valorization, their exploitation and their management. We offer implications for management theory.
