Hyperlegitimation dynamics: The resonance of hyperreality and veridical narratives in nascent markets
Nina Granqvist, Aalto University & Eero Vaara, University of Oxford
Abstract: Hypes are discursive phenomena occurring in nascent markets and other ambiguous and uncertain settings. Prior research links their rise and fall to narratives, yet falls short in providing an in-depth understanding of why certain narratives gain dominance and how they may lose traction. Building on a processual and interactional approach to resonance, we develop a model theorizing the underlying patterns of resonance—rooted in content and context—that govern which stories are retold or rejected. Rather than treating a hype’s rise and fall as a sequential pattern, we foreground a discursive struggle between narrative dynamics: hyperlegitimation driven by hyperreality narratives, and delegitimation enabled by veridical narratives. Our model specifies the self-reinforcing processes through which these dynamics emerge and are sustained. By grounding narrative legitimacy in resonance rather than presumed cultural authority or alignment, we highlight the fragile, audience-contingent nature of legitimation in hypes; the rise and collapse of hype is not just about changing “facts” but, rather, a shift in what resonates—and, thus, what appears legitimate. Our model offers a granular, interactional, and audience-sensitive explanation of the escalation and collapse of hypes in nascent markets, thereby extending our understanding of the discursive dynamics of hypes and narrative legitimation.
